Two words … wine fountain!
Remember the other day when I said the cats were pushing me forward? Well now it’s the wine.
Today may have been one of my favorite days walking through Spain. I’m shedding physical layers, like sending my bag forward (a hard but very necessary decision), and I’m shedding emotional layers as I continue to have burdens lifted off of my heart.
When I woke up this morning I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay a day and rest or continue on ahead. After doing a check of all my ailments my body decided that I needed to keep moving, and I’m so glad I did. About 30 minutes into my walk today, I was blessed with a fountain of wine! It is customary to use your pilgrim shell to take a few sips of this Spanish wine.
It was hard fo leave this national treasure but I was on my way to climb a few hills, so I figured I would give myself some extra time.
My walk through the countryside and wine fields was gorgeous. I’m getting much better at the hills; I could go uphill all day but the down hill is really testing the skills of my orthopedic surgeon. For lunch I wandered into the town of Azqueta and met up with some of my friends from Ukraine. They managed to acquire quite a bit of fountain wine; emptying all their bottles of water in the process.
They greeted me kindly and bought me lunch. They are both doctors so I’ll keep them around for a while 😉 They are also very kind and we enjoyed walking together for the rest of the day. They shared their wine with me, I shared my water, and we chanted Ukrainian anthems for a long while.
About 2 miles before Los Arcos we were greeted by a group of women who were serving coffee, cookies and water for free to pilgrims as they passed by. One happened to be from Florida - and even though our meeting was brief, I’m sure we will see each other again.
I am feeling really good today. My knee is pretty swollen and my foot is taking a beating but all in all, I’m good! I made it to Los Arcos, took a hot shower, did some laundry and about to head out for dinner.
Oh and then I fell down the stairs at my Hostel 😂🤦🏼♀️ But for those who know me, know it’s par for the course and I’m fine. I may just take those stairs a little slower after some wine this evening. 🤷🏼♀️
Tomorrow is a long day - 17.3 miles to Logrono. But rumor is there is a wine festival there tomorrow.
Buen Camino!
“The downhill is testing the skills of my orthopedic surgeon” made me LOL. We really test our surgeons don’t we?!
have a sip of wine for me!
A wine fountain ... oh my! Journey onward- You're doing great!🙂
So proud of you! 💛
What an inspiring post. So glad that despite the challenges you are pushing forward and enjoying the journey.
