Camino de Santiago Day 6: Puenta la Reina

Rain, rain go away!

Leaving Pamplona this morning was gorgeous. The streets were quiet, a light rain was drizzling and my walking partner, Natalie and I were just cruising along.

It is interesting when you meet people who are so similar to you. That is how I felt about Natalie. This morning we were meant to walk together. We shared similar stories, struggles and real life experiences. We wrestle with similar ideas and stigmas. We are from separate sides of the world, are the same age and miraculously are on a very similar journey.

The rain was strong today as we made our way up the “hill“ to the windmills, pilgrim statue and the mount of forgiveness. The sun broke through for a minute and gave us an incredible view.

Halfway up I was met by two of my Camino family members, Barbara and Steve. They were my healers and fairies today! We trudged through the mud, up a steep hill, battling rain and wind - but finally made it to the top.

The windmills are incredible, huge and are so powerful you can hear them as you climb up the mountain. However, the pilgrim statue is one of the highlights of my trip and was a true representation of everyone who has come before me and after me. It’s a reminder that although the Camino is a part of my life, I am also a part of its life.

The wind blew and the rain fell while we tried to take in the views around us. Our descent into Puenta la Reina was challenging. It was steep, rocky and very muddy.

The challenges of today were very physical and without Barbara and Steve, I’m not sure I would have made it. We hiked for 9 hours to get to the next town. I‘ve come to find that the Camino provides to you the people and relationships you need at those very particular moments. Our “Camino family” is there to cheer you on, give you a pep in your step, be a therapist, help you tend your ailments and provide love and support when you need it most.

Tonight I arrived at my accommodations - I booked a private room at Hotel el Cerco. I was greeted by a glass of lemonade, an elevator, a warm shower and a comfy bed. The pilgrim meal tonight was paella and it was amazing.

We drank some wine, told stories about our day and are now about to get some much needed rest. Tomorrow, our walk to Estella comes early!

Buen Camino!
