I crossed the Pyrenees!!
Today was a hard day! The hike was 13.2 miles, and over 2,200 feet in elevation gain. Then we had about a 1000 foot drop into town.
The day started off beautiful. We had a steep climb right off the bat, but thanks to some helpful tips from my fellow peregrinas (shoutout to Melissa) I have learned to manage those uphill battles (literally) pretty well.
I walked most of the day with a new friend, Emily and we talked, laughed, listened to music and even kicked a rock for about a mile to help pass the time. About three hours in, she asked me why I was walking the Camino. I shared a little about longing for direction on what I want the next part of my career to look like. I shared a bit about Afghanistan and my longing to pray for our friends that are left behind and for me to heal from that emotionally tragic work. I stumbled through this and imagine that it will only get easier to share the more people ask.
We walked through gorgeous hills and shady forests. Passed by flocks of sheep and grazing wild horses. The ringing of the bells around their next was just enchanting.
I took a small detour to a Virgin Mary statue and said a prayer for the people of Afghanistan and for other specific people who are on my heart.
After we reached the top of the Pyrenees it was time to begin our descent. It was a long and winding trail to the town of Roncesvalles and I took my time slowly walking down the path towards the town.
Once I made it to town I checked in to my hotel (which I splurged for thanks to my grandma - and man did I need it). I took a nice hot shower, had some wine and a nice dinner. Then I was fortunate enough to attend a Pilgrim’s mass and received an official blessing. It was very emotional and truly a spiritual experience unlike anything I’ve ever seen.
All in all today was a hard but rewarding day. Tomorrow is another 13.6 miles but mostly a straight and level path. I know this is where I am meant to be right now and I am beyond grateful for all those who made it possible by your endless support.
Now it’s time for bed again. I hope they serve me coffee in a huge bowl again. That was pretty epic.
Buen Camino!
Love you and so proud of you!❤️
I don't think my original comment went through- but YES QUEEN, you made it through a really tough section of your journey! You should be so so proud.
Amazing job Case!! Way to tackle those mountains!! Woo hoo! Now elevate those feet! Lol
Your blog is so awesome! I am starting on 10/1. Have similar reasons for my journey. Trying to figure out if I should retire from a job I enjoy. I spent most of 2005 and 2014 in Afghanistan and hope the Camino can help me heal for my sake and my family’s sake.
I’m enjoying reading your journey so much! So proud of you. I know God is so doing some pretty amazing things in you. Looking forward to tomorrow. Buen Camino Dios te bendiga.
