We made it to another big city!
Many times when I think about the distance of the Camino de Santiago, I measure my progress by big cities. First it’s Pamplona, then Burgos, finally Leon. Each of these places are a milestone of progress and are the perfect place to celebrate that accomplishment.
Arriving into Burgos was hard. It was a long 16+ mile day where the last two hours were walking through industrial parks on the outskirts of a big town. There are alternate routes that take a more scenic approach to Burgos, and according to my guidebook I think that’s what I took. I passed by the Burgos airport and watched a plane take off, wandered next to a river, and followed a long (and I mean long) path through a park that can only be compared to the Central Park of this Spanish town. Hillary, Hannah and I sang Mamma Mia show tunes to pass the time.
Crossing the river into the city was breathtaking. I didn’t expect the central Cathedral to be as massive and ornate as it was. I felt for a moment I had been transported to the Notre Dam in Paris. The massive spires, detailed carvings and medieval architecture was remarkable. The highlight of the day was sitting in the square, drinking vino tinto and listening to the massive bells ring at the cathedral.
What was more special is I got to FaceTime with my niece and nephew! They also got to hear the bells chime.
Tomorrow is a later start for me. We have 20 miles ahead of us. Yikes!!
Buen Camino!
