Camino de Santiago Day 13: San Juan de Ortega

High climbs and great views!

This morning was an early start as my camino family and I rolled out of our Albergue at 7:00 AM ready to hit the trail. I can’t recommend enough bringing ear plugs with you if you decide to sleep in the Albergues. They will certainly save you a few hours of Zz’s.

The walk this morning was fast and beautiful. I can’t quite get over watching the sun rise and the moon set as I walk through the rolling hills of Spain. The mornings are so quiet and really the perfect time to reflect.

Dinner last night was so fun! I had the pilgrim menu and was served warm garlic soup, chicken and potatoes and a chocolate dessert. Of course as always it’s served with a bottle of wine and I had no trouble partaking in that as well. One of the gentlemen pilgrims was celebrating his birthday and the echo of different languages all singing a round of Happy Birthday was something I won’t soon forget.

Today on the trail we had a pretty steep climb, but gorgeous views were offered at the top. About halfway up the hill, we met a mom and her two girls (7 and 11) who were walking two days of the Camino while enjoying their weekend away from school. I walked for a long while with the 7 year old. Wise beyond her years and almost fluent in English, our conversation was innocent and beautiful. She raced ahead with chalk, picking up and coloring rocks with yellow arrows to help the pilgrims behind us know the way.

As we made our way into town we were greeted by a few friendly and playful bulls. We steered clear (pun intended) but were able to watch from across the road as they made their way along.

Tomorrow is a long day to Burgos, about 17 miles total. I have my first blister that I’m treating the best way I know how and praying tomorrow I’ll wake up and it will be all better. Haha wishful thinking!

The Monastery in San Juan de Ortega is lovely and a great place to get a good night sleep. Hopefully these pilgrims don’t open the windows because it’s ccccold in here!

Goodnight all! Buen Camino!
